Learn Qi Gong

What is Qi Gong?

Qi Gong is part of an ancient Chinese exercise and healing system.   "Qi" roughly translates to vital energy, information, breath or spirit.  "Gong" means work, cultivation or mastery.   Qi Gong is therefore sometimes translated as "energy work", "vital energy cultivation" or "mastery of your energy."

When you practice the slow, mindful physical movements of Qi Gong you're training to have more resiliency, balance, flexibility, focus and awareness by bringing qi into the muscles, bones and tendons through specifically designed routines.   Qi Gong is also a highly effective way to lessen the effects of aging and manage your stress.

Benefits of Qi Gong

Research reported through the National Institute of Health has concluded Qi Gong provides consistent and significant health benefits related to:

  • bone density
  • cardiopulmonary effects
  • physical function
  • falls and related risk factors
  • psychological symptoms
  • immune function

Feeling Your Heart Energy

In traditional Yogic chakra theory, there are 7 major chakras in the body.  These chakras are like emotional and spiritual transducers that absorb and distribute life energy to various body organs and tissues.   In the same way that physical toxins can produce illness, emotional toxins can poison the physical and spiritual body in many subtle ways.

The Heart Chakra

Located in the centre of your chest, your heart chakra is associated with your heart, lungs and thymus gland.  These are related to the bodily functions of circulation and immunity.

Emotionally and spiritually your heart chakra is related to issues of love - loving relationships with others, with yourself and with all of life.  The Institute of Heartmath is doing some very interesting research into how our hearts are also involved in intuition.

Your Heart Energy

Feeling your heart energy isn't anything weird or woo-woo.  It's a real physical sensation.  It's that warm feeling in your chest when you remember a time you felt loved unconditionally.  It's the lightness you feel when you forgive someone who has caused you harm.   But what if you don't feel the love, and you're not ready to forgive? Then create your own positive heart energy and fake it til you make it.

A good way to do this is to watch a feel-good movie - something that gives you a comforting physical sensation in your heart centre.  (I find a good romantic comedy can resonate in my chest for hours.)  While you're feeling the physical sensations the movie creates, meditate on it.

Sit comfortably, breath deeply and slowly, and focus on that awareness in your chest.  How does it feel?  What words would you use to describe it?  With practice you'll be able to re-create those feelings during meditation without even watching the movie.

Once you become aware of your heart energy, you may be surprised how often your heart sends you messages.  Learn to listen to them, and learn to live from your heart.

Here in Xanadu....

"X" is for Xanadu

Xanadu is the fictional place in Samuel T. Coleridge's poem "Kubla Khan, the name of which has become synonymous with idyllic beauty.   While beauty can be seen anywhere we allow ourselves to see it, it's just more obvious is some places

than in others

But if you look with your heart, you'll find beauty here

 here

and even here

When you see with your heart, Xanadu is everywhere.

Transition Tango

"T" is for Transition

Transition can be a rough ride.  When we change the way we interact with the world we meet resistance.  From others.  From ourselves.  This resistance can easily knock us back into our former behavioural thoughts and patterns.  For me, the transition from a brain-based life to a more heart-based life has taken 8 years..... and counting.  What do I mean "brain" or "heart"-based?  A brain based life is run by our logical, rational, ego-centric brain.  The universe is a place to be understood and controlled using tools like science and mathematics.  Heart-based is a sensory approach where we accept paradoxes, express our creativity through the arts or caring, and view individuals as unique expressions of one universal energy.

Imagine a vertical line.
On the left side is Brain.  |  On the right side is Heart.

Over the last 8 years I've been dancing a little hop-scotch-like jig back and forth across this line.  It's been dizzying, and at times even a little crazy, but all in all it's been a dance worth doing.

What about you?  Are you doing the Transition Tango?  What's on either side of your line?  Share if you dare.....crazy loves company!
